Why most introductions should never be made

Scarcity is what gives an introduction its information value — and why declining is the real product.

TL;DR
  • An introduction that costs the maker nothing carries no information.
  • Value comes from visible selectivity: more declined than routed.
  • One mediocre match spends the credibility of every future introduction.

The easiest thing in this business is making an introduction. Two emails, one bridge line, done. Which is exactly why most introductions are worthless: they cost the maker nothing, so they carry no information. When everyone can vouch, a vouch means nothing.

An introduction only has value if it’s scarce — if the person making it visibly declines more than they route. The buyer taking the call needs to know that the last four candidates for this meeting didn’t make it through. That’s what lets a fifteen-minute conversation start where a cold cycle would end after two months.

A vouch that costs nothing carries nothing. Scarcity is the signal.

This is why I hold both sides to the same fixed standard before anyone speaks. Decision-maker present. Active need. Clear relevance. A timing window that’s open now, not next quarter. Miss one criterion and the introduction doesn’t ship — not because the parties are bad, but because a mediocre match spends the one asset that can’t be rebuilt quickly: the credibility of the next introduction.

Every connector eventually learns this or burns out their network learning it. Reputation compounds only when you say no in public and yes in private.

Most requests are declined. That’s not a capacity problem. That’s the product.
